Members of the Abundant Life congregation met at the home of Inga Geving on June 10, 1984 to plan for the new work. The first worship service of the congregation was held on June 17, 1984 at Our Savior's Christian Academy. On that day the constitution and bylaws were adopted by the congregation.
The congregation was organized on Sunday, July 8, and Abundant Life Church of Thief River Falls became a legally organized corporation under Minnesota law on July 10, 1984. That month a letter of call was extended to Pastor Berton Hushagen who served as pastor until July 1994. Services were held at the Knox School gymnasium-auditorium beginning in September 1984 through March 1985.
Pastor Hushagen, who had a degree in engineering, designed, made the floor plans and drew to scale the new church building. The building is modeled after the "Stave Churches" in Norway with an upper and lower roof. The church purchased 66 acres of land in October 1984 as the church property and broke ground on October 11. Building continued throughout the winter months
The first worship service in the new church building was held on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1985. On the first birthday of the church, observed on July 14, 1985, the building and grounds were dedicated. The church bell tower and bell were dedicated on October 1, 1995.
After Pastor Hushagen's retirement, Pastor Wes Langaas was called and served as pastor from 1994 through 2012.
At the annual meeting of January 15, 1995, the congregation voted to affiliate with the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations and change its name to Abundant Life Free Lutheran Church.
Pastor LeRoy Flickinger has been serving as pastor since May 2016.
